How to care For Your Hair Extensions

As a Las Vegas hairstylist one of the common reasons I hear on why many women do not get extensions is because of the maintenance. Let’s be honest, yes hair extensions require quite the maintenance but want to know something? It is totally worth it.

The confidence and happiness I have seen extensions bring on many of my clients is unmatched. Let’s get into how to care for your extensions in a way it will not even feel like hard work.

It is easy, make the at home care part of your routine. I promise it only adds a few extra minutes to your routine.

Hair Extension Care

Keep your hair Extensions free of tangles as much as possible

One thing you have to be very careful with is keeping your hair free of tangles. As extensions grow out, tangles and knots can easily happen up at the root and cause tugging or damage. If knots or tangles go ignored for too long they can easily get worse real quick and become a big problem to comb out. Avoid letting your hair get tangled by using these tips.

  • Put your hair up in a loose braid or ponytail

  • Brush your extensions throughout the day

  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Care for your extension hair as if it was your real hair

It is important to extend your extension’s life by as much time as possible. Just like our own hair, extensions get split ends, damaged, dry, and brittle. If you do not want to find yourself replacing your hair so often, take good care of it.

  • Always use heat protectant

  • Use a moisturizing conditioner and hair mask

  • Double shampoo and rinse well

  • Avoid extreme pulling or tugging

Limited swimming or proper preparation before swimming

Before going swimming, I recommend spraying your hair down with clean water and applying some type of conditioner or hair mask to avoid your extensions from absorbing the chlorine or salt water. Chlorine and salt water can cause your extensions to feel dry and brittle if your a swimming or in water after for long periods of time or doing it often.

Hair Extension Maintenance

Depending on what method of extensions was used on you and on how fast your hair grows you will be in the salon on average anytime between 6-8 weeks for a move-up.

Some people push it and go 10-12 weeks but is it not safe as your hair can be more prone to pulling and tugging when it is that grown out and cause damage.

When to Purchase new hair Extensions

Hair is recommended to be purchased brand new on average every 9-12 months. If you follow all maintenance and at home care, you can go 12 months with the same hair also depending on the quality of hair that was used on you.

Conclusion

As I mentioned in the beginning, hair extensions require some attention, time and effort. However, in my opinion, they are totally worth it. I have clients who have wanted hair extensions all their life but were always told that they were too much maintenance and would be damaging on their real hair.

Yes, hair extensions can be a lot of maintenance AND damaging. This is why you need to do your research and make sure you see a professional for your hair extension application as well as do your part with the at home care.

When applied and taken care of correctly, extensions are magic.
